I own 6 Kala Brand Ukuleles and find, at their middle price point ($300-500), they are a very reliable choice for ukuleles. I also find that the “setup” of your ukulele and where you purchase the instrument is critical. That’s why I use The Ukulele Site website for my purchases. (See my resource for The Ukulele Site.)
UPDATE: I’ve recently been in touch with Ian from Kala Brand Music Company in order to purchase a Kala “Striped Ebony Fretless U-Bass.” Ian was most helpful and made sure I had the requested strings and any adjustments needed for setting up the bass. He also checked for any discounts that were available at the time. Thank you Ian! I look forward to playing this beautiful U-Bass.
